‘Fast car’ Tracy Chapman

“Most of the songs that I’ve picked are about moving on in life… Tracy Chapman for instance, she just burst on to the scene with this song. She’s such a great artiste, no lavish videos, but great lyrics. This song which is about a girl who dreams of escaping all her troubles and driving away in a fast car. But the reason I love this song is because it won me first prize in a singing competition when I was in the 10th Std.”

‘Somebody’s crying’ – Chris Isaak

“Chris Isaac is one of the lesser known artistes in India, but he’s just so brilliant! I love this song in particular because I feel like it’s about my life. If I really like a guy I act like a complete clown around him and I’ll be too shy to let him know how I feel. ‘Somebody’s crying’ is so important because it speaks of the importance of communicating in relationships… you never know, somebody might be crying, just when you think they are doing fine!”

‘I’ll remember’ – Madonna

“Every time I hear this song, I’m immediately transported back in time to my childhood. I love the video for many reasons, mainly because it was the first time I saw Madonna fully covered in a video! I love the way the video has captured the melody of the song, the vintage microphone, Madonna’s gorgeous necklace… stunning!”

‘Broken hearts’ – Don Williams

“The quintessential country song! I associate it with America, never ending roads, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas. This song is about loneliness and the sense of solitude each one of us carries within us. I truly believe some broken hearts never mend, some memories never end !!”

‘Brand new day’ – Sting

“This is a song that defines life , rhythm and love. Heartbreaks are a part of our lives, and we have to remember that tomorrow will be a Brand New Day. Also Sting is at his best in this song. Love the line ‘ Turn the clock to zero boss. The river’s wide , we’ll swim across. We’re starting up a Brand new Day !”

‘Kiss from a rose’ – Seal

“Such an amazing singer! Of all the songs that I have picked, this one is probably the toughest to sing. I feel there is a lot of Indian raagdari in this song and if it were to be translated in Hindi it would make a wonderful song.”

‘You’re still the one’ – Shania Twain

“It’s the ultimate love song and I’m still waiting to sing this for ‘The One’. I truly love watching Shania Twain perform , no shenanigans just pure music.”

‘Stranger in Moscow’ – Michael Jackson

“Michael Jackson has always had a huge influence on my career. In fact, ‘Oye shava’ was completely inspired by him and his videos . ‘Stranger in Moscow’ is very different from most of his songs; it has a sense of vulnerability which is very rare in his songs.”

‘Hard Day’s Night’ – Beatles

“I remember playing this song every day after school on my two in one tape recorder. In fact, it was dad who got me hooked to the Beatles .”

‘I need you’ – Marc Anthony

“This is for all the boys out there… waiting for the perfect song to sing to her ?? your search ends right here. The words from the beginning to the end speak brilliance in emotions. Also Marc Anthony is blessed with such a powerful voice”.

‘Fazaa bhi hai rawaan’ – Nikaah (OST)

“In retrospect it’s safe to say that I was simply obsessed with this film. I loved Salma Agha’s shy and naive character and the way she has sung all the songs in this film. Nikaah was one of the first few films we had at home on VHS and I would watch it all day, every day.”

‘Mere pyar ki umar’ – Waaris (OST)

“No film has been able to capture Punjabi culture like this one. ‘Mere pyar ki umar’ is a song that seems to be forgotten and I would love to hear it amongst the classics played on the radio.”

‘Mausam hai ashiqana’ – Pakeezah (OST)

“This film is a classic and Meena Kumari’s beauty is unparalleled! I love this song in particular because of the manner in which it was shot. Especially the shot where she is crossing the Brooke with the sandals in her hand or sitting alone in a faraway tent……romance romance ”

Dama Dam Mast Qalandar - Runa Laila.

“When I hear this song I think of Punjab, Pakistan, survival, strength and my elders. I have never seen my mom, aunts and uncles dance, other than when Mast Qalandar plays. So I had to do my version in ‘Sagari Rayn’ , but I’m still inspired and will always be by Runa Laila’s rendition”
