Ragz
had dabbled with modelling ever
since she was a child as she
did the rounds of advertising
agencies with her father. But
her interest in modelling was
born out of her love for acting.
The first to notice this was
acclaimed director Shekhar Kapoor
(of ‘Bandit Queen’
and ‘Elizabeth’
fame), and soon Ragz found herself
facing the camera at a photo
shoot for the lead role opposite
Bobby Deol. All this at the
tender age of 13! Her teenage
awkwardness had the better of
her as she failed to secure
the part.
Cut to two years later, and
Ragz signed her first film,
‘Zid’ only
because the music of this film
was to be composed by the legendary
O.P. Nayyar. For the first schedule
of shoot for the film Ragz had
to beg for a month off from
school as she was nearing her
Class X board exams! Grappling
with films and school, she managed
to wrap up the film and secure
a distinction in her exams.
Next on the anvil was a film
with the director who went on
to be nicknamed “Director
No. 1”, David Dhawan.
The film was titled ‘Aankhen’
and was produced by Pahlaj Nihalani
and Ragz’ co-stars in
the film were Chunkey Pandey
and Govinda. ‘Aankhen’
proved to be one of the biggest
hits of the year 1993 and Ragz
followed it up the following
year with another blockbuster
that remains firmly etched in
public memory- ‘Main
Khiladi Tu Anari’.
It was around this time that
television programming came
into its own in India and Ragz
was given the opportunity to
exploit her love for acting
on TV as a VJ on one of India’s
most popular countdown shows,
‘BPL Oye’.
In a later avatar of the show,
Ragz went on to even write her
own scripts and penned memorable
characters such as ‘Titu
Singh’, ‘Baby Pashu’,
‘Bahadur Singh’
and ‘Daadi’.
